Workshops 2013

All workshops are held at The Minerva Centre, Llandidloes, and run from 10.30am - 4.30pm, unless otherwise stated.

For some of these workshops you may need to bring some of you own equipment (e.g. scissors) and / or materials; you will be advised of this when booking

Workshops should be booked using our Booking Form, which should be completed and returned to us as soon as possible. Workshops have a limited number of spaces, so please book early!

Produce a felted bowl using wool fibres, with other materials, yarns etc as decoration. You will be shown how to lay out the wool fibres, use a resist template, adding various yarns, materials etc for decoration. We may also have a go at adding 3D elements to the bowl.

Discover this sturdy variation of rag-rug making, using all sorts of fabrics, recycled wool, yarn and fleece. Pulled through rug canvas and held in place by a ‘locker thread’, this technique of rug making produces strong rugs with great potential for geometric designs.

This gentle introduction will help you to ‘reconnect’ with your sewing machine. We will start in the morning by making simple corsage (flower brooches) using wool jumpers/blankets. After lunch we will up-cycle/revamp a t-shirt to make it look more stylish &and individual.

Students will need to bring their own sewing machine (modern electric preferred).

On this 2-day course, learn to make your own basket using traditional techniques, materials and tools. Create a stunning basket, with or without a handle, that you can use at home, or brush up on previous skills and try something new.

Students will learn several different techniques of making felt beads and felt flowers, all using the Wet Felting method. We'll be combining a variety of coloured Merino Fleece with Silk Fibres. Students will then design and make at least one necklace, and, time permitting, a flower brooch, using a combination of these techniques. The techniques we will use can also be adapted for 3 dimensional felt work.

On this 2-day course, have a go on looms set up ready to weave – a George Wood dobby loom, 2 Harris table looms and an AVL 16-shaft computer dobby loom. You can expect to weave a table mat or a short scarf/sampler. Stimulating and creative workshop environment with books and journals. If you would like to bring your own table loom I am happy to help you make and set up a warp with materials from your yarn store and set up with the information to complete your warp.

This workshop does NOT take place in the Minerva Centre, but at Steve's studio in Sarn, about 20 miles away.

Experimenting with intriguing ideas on drawing, recognising positive and negative space, understanding tone and its importance in your work and colour, the power this can have in your work. The aim is for everyone to have fun whilst learning in a supportive environment – so put aside any old terrors from school or college days (for at least a few hours) and simply do what you love.

Using madder, indigo, onion skins and any other available plants we will dye pre-mordanted fleece and create a wonderful array of colours. You will be able to take samples of the wool to keep a record of what you have done. You are welcome to bring your own yarn to dye but will need to talk to me about mordanting it first.

It will be possible to buy dyed wool at the end of the day.

This workshop does NOT take place in the Minerva Centre, but at Goetre, about 4 miles away.

Learn how to make seamless 3-D felt and create a bag, bowl, tea-cosy, etc. A wide range of sheep, other animal and plant fibre plus yarns will be available for your use.

An amazing loom which takes 5 minutes to warp up with a unique heddle that makes the whole weaving process so easy. In a day you should manage to weave a wall hanging, or a small scarf. You will be using plant-dyed yarn and fleece – so it is guaranteed to be beautiful!

Produce a nuno felted scarf using organza fabric and wool fibres, with silk fibre decoration. You will be shown how to lay out the wool fibres onto the organza fabric and add decorative silk fibres on top, how to work these fibres so that they felt through the fabric, and also work the edges of the piece to form a beautiful finished scarf.
