Workshops 2017

All workshops run from 10.30am to 4.30pm. Each Workshop is £38.00 per person, payable when booking, plus any materials costs, to be paid directly to the Tutor on the day.

For some of these workshops you may need to bring some of you own equipment (e.g. scissors) and / or materials; you will be advised of this when booking.

Would you like to crochet something amazing with a different design on each side? If so, this workshop is for you. Learn to make tablemats / coasters / scarf or start a blanket, with two different colours and a different design on each side, all worked and interwoven together. Two into one does go!

Learn to needlefelt a cute little penguin chick, using pure wool fleece. This is a dry technique and you will be using undyed, naturally coloured fleece from my Monmouthshire flock of Corriedale sheep. Students may bring their own needles if they wish.

During this workshop, we will start by making a woolly brooch or two to help us get warmed up, then we will look at different ways to extend a woolly top/jumper into a tunic/dress and/or turn a jumper/cardigan into a funky cropped/tailed waistcoat.
For this workshop, you will need to bring an electric sewing machine, basic sewing kit, sharp scissors and a small selection of close knit/felted woolly jumpers/cardigans/etc you wish to chop up, any trims/extras you may have that you wish to use. I will bring a good selection of woollies, threads, scissors etc. which you will be welcome to use. (£5 charge, payable on the day).

Make a pin cushion and a cushion pad from recycled woollen blankets using rag rug making techniques. Old woollen blankets are a wonderful textile resource, dyed and cut into strips they can be recycled into fantastic rugs.
This workshop will explore different rug making techniques including standing wool, hooking, braiding and prodding.
We will start the day making a standing wool pincushion. After a demonstration of various techniques including use of a rotary cutter you can design and make a cushion pad. This workshop will cover all the techniques needed to make larger rugs at home.

Learn the basic ‘wet felting’ technique to create a simple design or landscape using Merino wool tops, fibres and yarns. Pre-felts can be made during the workshop to incorporate into your final piece.
Bring a photo, drawing or image for inspiration, a waterproof bag to carry wet work home and an old sponge and towel to keep your work area dry.

Fingerless gloves work well in felt – so cosy and decorative! Made with a resist, they are seamless and you will be shown how to create an excellent fit. Pieces of fabric can be incorporated into the felt to create a beautifully textured surface design. This can be made all the more special by adding other fibres, threads or stitch. You will be supplied with merino fleece and a variety of other materials in a range of colours so that you can make something exciting and individual.

What could be more satisfying then making your own willow basket? On this course we will learn how to make a basket using traditional techniques. The materials that you will be working with are all completely natural and the processes have been passed down through the generations. Your basket will be practical, strong and robust, and completely individual to you.

Discover the old Rag Rug skills of hooking and prodding whilst making hessian bunting, decorated with rag rug flowers and/or hooked lettering.
Edged hessian triangle will be provided along with decorative fabrics and sewing will be minimal. We will aim to make a 6’ bunting strip.

During this workshop, we will create funky woolly freestyle patchwork frames, using various scraps of woolly fabric from old jumpers to blankets. You can stitch them together by hand using wool yarn and silk threads, use a sewing machine or both?! Purrfect for a photocopy of a favourite photo, an image from a magazine, art print or even blank for a handwritten quote/positive affirmation. A fun, relaxing and creative introduction to upcycling. For this workshop, you will need to bring an electric sewing machine (optional), basic sewing kit, sharp scissors and a small selection of close knit/felted woolly jumpers/favourite material/blankets you wish to chop up, any trims/extras to decorate that you may have and wish to use. I will bring a selection of chopped up woollies/tweeds/blankets, wool yarn/silks/threads, buttons, scissors etc that you will be welcome to use (£5 charge, payable on the day)..

Learn the delights of using the dry, needle felting technique to sculpt pure wool creatures. You will be provided with naturally coloured, undyed fleece, produced in Wales, to model your own tiny teddy or diminutive donkey.

Evening wrap or scarf: Participants will complete a hand felted project of their own design using the nuno felting technique. Materials will be available on the day – merino tops in various colours and a wide selection of organza or silk scarves. Students can bring their own materials if they wish, however, it is advisable to discuss this with Su beforehand.

Level: intermediate to advanced.

Learn how to make a basket or bowl using a random weave technique building from a simple circle to produce a beautiful sculptural piece of basketry. Handles can be added or the basket can be left as a simple bowl.

Participants will complete an embellished felted project of their own design, using a wet felting technique. Once mastered, this technique can be used to make larger handbags and other 3D projects.

Materials will be available on the day – merino tops in various colours plus a wide selection of embellishing wools. Participants can bring their own materials if they wish.
